The calm
On a calm, windless day, Minette Bay is the perfect place to launch your stand up paddle board for a day on the water. This is Kitimat’s only waterfront nature park and is the easiest place to access Douglas Channel from the town.
- Waterway AreaMinette Bay is a unique saltwater estuary located at the very head of the Douglas Channel. It offers a much calmer paddling experience than the exposed waters of the fjord. The bay is characterized by wide mudflats and extensive salt marshes, which are transformed by massive tidal ranges. During high tide, paddlers can explore the fringes of the coastal rainforest. The bay is a haven for waterfowl, and it is not uncommon to see seals venturing into the shallow waters. The surrounding mountains provide a dramatic backdrop, often shrouded in atmospheric mists typical of the North Coast. The geography is dominated by its tides, which can move with surprising speed. At low tide, the bay becomes almost entirely mudflats, so timing your trip with the tide chart is essential. The new Minette Bay West Park provides excellent access for families and beginner paddlers.
