Kootenay believe it? This lake is big and beautiful.

Cradled between the Selkirk and Purcell mountain ranges, Kootenay Lake is one of British Columbia’s most spectacular waterways, stretching more than 100 kilometres from north to south. Its deep blue waters invite exploration, whether you’re gliding into a quiet bay, paddling along rugged shoreline, or setting out on a longer lake journey.

Launch from welcoming lakeside communities such as Nelson, Kaslo, or Balfour and you’ll soon find yourself surrounded by forested slopes, rocky bluffs, and beaches often reachable only by water. Day paddlers will discover sheltered coves and island outcrops perfect for drifting or stopping for a shoreline picnic. For those looking to go farther, the lake rewards longer trips with remote campsites, quiet anchorages, and ever-changing mountain views. Wildlife sightings are also common here, with bald eagles overhead and deer along the shore. From calm morning reflections to glowing sunset light, Kootenay Lake offers unforgettable paddling in every season.
