Common Grounds
Stop by Common Grounds for a cozy afternoon coffee and a homemade treat: fuel for the next leg of your journey. From there, make your way to Robson, where your guide awaits and your river adventure begins.
Endless Adventure – SUP Sturgeon Search
Meet your paddleboard instructor in Robson at the Lions Head Pub. Review the paddling basics to ensure you can control and maneuver your board on slow moving water. After your lesson we float downstream from the boat launch on the Columbia River toward the location of where sturgeon prefer to hang in the shallows during the Spring. The crystal clear waters allow us the chance to see groups of them up close from the view of a paddleboard.Includes: Certified Paddle Board instructor.Suitable for ages 17 and up.
Lions Head Inn Restaurant & Pub
After your sturgeon search, reward your efforts with an après-paddle pint at Lions Head Smoke & Brew Pub. With riverside views, craft beer, and hearty fare, it’s the perfect place to toast the day’s adventure and settle in for a relaxed evening.
Day Two
This is your big paddle day: a self-guided journey on Lower Arrow Lake as well as back along the mighty Columbia River where you'll drift past mountain vistas, quiet forested banks, and local wildlife as you explore one of BC’s most scenic waterways.
Crumbs Bakery Café
Start your morning at Crumbs Bakery, where the aroma of fresh coffee mingles with the scent of just-baked goods. Whether you’re craving something sweet or savoury, this charming local spot offers the perfect treat to begin your day in Castlegar.
Maggie’s Mug | Castlegar BC
Fuel your morning with a fresh brew from Crumbs Bakery and grab a packed lunch from Maggie’s Mug—. After that, swing by Maggie’s Mug because you’ll want extra good and water today. Maggie's is a beloved local spot where you'll find a hearty packed meal to fuel your river expedition. With generous portions and home-style flavours, it’s the perfect grab-and-go option before the day's outing.
Scotties Marina
Venture back to Robson and up Broadwater Road to Scotties Marina, where you can rent a kayak for your self-guided journey. Launch from their docks and cross the lake to the southern shore just east of Scottie's where you'll find an abandoned rail tunnel.
Labarthe Tunnel
Located on the southern shore of Lower Arrow Lake, the Labarthe Tunnel is a former rail tunnel that is 187 feet (57 metres) long or 57 metres. Depending on the water levels of the lake, the tunnel might be entirely submerged or so high on the shoreline it can be walked through. But at just the right levels, the tunnel is partially submerged and you can paddle all the way through it. Check at Scottie's Marina to learn about where the lake levels are at and whether the tunnel can be accessed.
Robson Ferry Landing
After visiting the tunnel, return to Scottie's Marina and load up your kayak for the short drive back to the historic Robson Ferry Landing, located across from the Lion's Head pub where you started your adventure yesterday. Now's the time for your self-guided tour of the mighty Columbia River.
Robson Bridge
Just steps from your launch point was where the original Castlegar ferry once docked. It was the only way people could get between the two communities before 1902 when the current bridge was built. As you pass under the bridge, be wary of the increased current and stay away from the pilings so as not to get pinned.
Waldie Island
Glide past or stop by the Waldie Island Heron Reserve, a protected sanctuary and vital nesting ground for the majestic blue heron. This quiet stretch of river offers a rare chance to witness these graceful birds in their natural habitat—an awe-inspiring moment along your journey.
Millenium Park
Make a stop at Millennium Park Beach, Castlegar’s flagship green space and a hub of community fun. With riverside access, open lawns, and home to Canada’s tallest playground, it’s the perfect place to stop and catch your breath.
Zuckerberg Island
Step back in time at The Zuckerberg Island Park, where the stories of the Lakes Salish people come to life—from ancient fishing traditions and winter pit-houses, to the historic journey of explorer David Thompson down the Columbia River over 200 years ago, and the unique legacy of Alexander Zuckerberg’s Russian Orthodox Chapel House.
Kinnard Bridge
Towering above the Columbia River, the Kinnaird Bridge marks a striking gateway for paddlers setting out on the water. As you glide beneath its steel span, you’re moving through a corridor where history, nature, and modern life converge. Look up and you’ll catch glimpses of the Selkirk Mountains framing your route, and if you’re early enough, the morning light dancing off its structure makes for an unforgettable start to your journey. Note that the current can increase here so stay away from the pilings to avoid getting pinned.
Waterloo Eddy
The Waterloo Eddy Regional Par is a 3.7-hectare waterfront park along the eastern shores of the Columbia River, just south of Castlegar. It offers day-use recreation for local residents and visitors can enjoy fishing, hiking, swimming, picnicking, and the surrounding nature in this serene setting. Note that the waters can get a bit turbulent around here.
Genelle Boat Launch
Finish your journey at the Genelle Boat Launch, a calm take-out nestled on the west shore of the Columbia. As the final stop on your self-guided paddling adventure, it offers an easy landing where you can enjoy the sweeping river views one last time.
The Grand Buddha Bistro | Castlegar BC
After your unforgettable paddling adventure on the mighty Columbia River, refuel at The Grand Buddha Bistro. With its vibrant, multicultural menu, there's something to satisfy every palate in your group.

After the big paddle yesterday, you deserve a gentle morning before an exciting afternoon of wild whitewater.

Plan for a safe and well informed adventure
At Paddle BC, we’re as excited about your upcoming adventure as you are! Our goal is to help you experience the breathtaking beauty of British Columbia’s waterways, but we want to ensure you return home with only good memories. While we provide the gateway to these wild places, your safety is ultimately a personal commitment. We embrace a “challenge by choice” philosophy, which means you are the best judge of your own abilities. By staying within your skill set and taking personal responsibility for your journey, you ensure that your trip is as safe as it is spectacular. To help you prepare for a successful multiday adventure, we’ve outlined these six essential safety pillars:

Carry Mandatory Gear
Ensure you have all Transport Canada required equipment: a lifejacket (PFD), throw bag, whistle, bailing device, and a reflective signaling device. This gear is your first line of defense.
Plan for Conditions
River levels and weather in BC change rapidly. Check forecasts regularly, be aware that many hazards may be hidden, and always have a solid contingency plan in place.
Respect Nature
Expect to encounter wildlife in the BC wilderness. Respect their space, protect the ecosystem, and strictly follow “Leave No Trace” principles to keep our waters pristine.
Dress for Immersion
Always “dress for the swim, not the paddle.” Use appropriate thermal layers to protect against cold water shock, which can occur instantly and lead to physical incapacitation.
Know Your Limits
Practice “challenge by choice” and never attempt water that exceeds your ability. Don’t let a multiday itinerary pressure you into paddling beyond your personal skill set.
Assess and Manage Risk
River paddling carries inherent risks like injury or entrapment. Remain vigilant, scout ahead when necessary, and remember that help may be far away during your adventure.
