Located three hours north of Spokane, Washington, four hours from Kelowna, or an hour-long flight from Vancouver, Castlegar is a paddling epicentre without the crowds. This is where mountains and two major rivers meet in a fertile valley that boasts rich cultural heritage, a thriving artistic scene, and more than enough paddling for every type of enthusiast. From lazy paddleboard sessions on Lower Arrow Lake to guided whitewater excursions on the Slocan to world-class kayak fishing on both the Columbia and Kootenay rivers, Castlegar serves up the ultimate mix of paddling adventure and small-town charm.

Trip Overview

Day One: Paddle with Purpose – SUP Sturgeon Search on the Columbia River with Endless Adventure.
Day Two: Journey the Columbia – A full day self-guided paddling tour of the Columbia River.
Day Three: Art and AdventureCastlegar Sculpturewalk, and Endless Adventure Adventure Rafting on the Slocan River.

River and weather conditions can change rapidly, be prepared, and have a contingency plan. Not all river hazards may be visible. Plan ahead, you are in wild British Columbia, expect to encounter wildlife, respect nature and leave no trace. Make sure you bring appropriate safety equipment listed under transport Canada regulations (PFD, throw bag, whistle, bailing device and reflective device). Dress for the swim not the paddle, wear appropriate thermal layers in case you end up in the water, cold water could send your body into shock. Paddle BC is not responsible for any injury or loss of life that may occur. Paddle BC trips are challenge by choice, you are responsible for yourself, don’t paddle outside of your skill set.

Day One – Paddle with Purpose

Arrive in Castlegar and ease into the Kootenay pace with a cozy coffee from Common Grounds, a local favourite. Then it’s off to Lion’s Head boat launch to meet your SUP instructor from Endless Adventure. Together, you’ll glide along the Columbia River in search of the elusive sturgeon, learning paddling techniques and local lore along the way. After a rewarding session on the water, head up to Lion’s Head Smoke & Brew Pub a stone’s throw from the river for craft beer and riverside views with your paddling crew.

    Meet your paddleboard instructor in Robson at the Lions Head Pub. Review the paddling basics to ensure you can control and maneuver your board on slow moving water. After your lesson we float downstream from the boat launch on the Columbia River toward the location of where sturgeon prefer to hang in the shallows during the Spring. The crystal clear waters allow us the chance to see groups of them up close from the view of a paddleboard.
    Includes: Certified Paddle Board instructor.

Day Two – Journey the Columbia
