Nanaimo is located within the traditional territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation, whose people have travelled the surrounding coastal waters by canoe for thousands of years. These waterways, stretching across the Salish Sea and the Gulf Islands, have long served as important cultural and travel routes and remain deeply connected to the Snuneymuxw community today. Paddle BC is continuing to build relationships with local tourism organizations to share more detailed paddling information about this area. As these partnerships develop, we look forward to expanding the information available and highlighting more paddling opportunities in and around Nanaimo.
